About The Book
This unique collection of witticisms, history, and useful information is
packaged in the hilarious tradition of Liz Carpenter, a treasured Texas
personality. The author’s stories represent a lifetime of research and
personal experiences through nearly a dozen presidential administrations,
from her early experiences as a White House correspondent to her years
within the walls of 1600 Pennsylvania Avenue as press secretary for Lady
Bird Johnson, to her active role in the birth of the contemporary women’s
movement. Carpenter believes one of the greatest challenges facing today’s
speechwriters is “humanizing their speakers,” so she includes a full
chapter on writing speeches for high-tech executive types. Start With a
Laugh is organized both for easy reading and for quick reference. For the
reader who wishes to explore the book from cover to cover, each chapter
explains Carpenter’s philosophy about a particular aspect of speechwriting
and features her owns speeches as illustrations. For quick reference, the
reader can find a compendium of abbreviated resources, including an index
of speeches, lists of speechwriting dos and don’ts, a collection of
inspiring and funny quotes for cribbing, and questions to ask in advance of
delivering a speech.
ABOUT THE AUTHOR:
Liz Carpenter-sixth-generation Texan-is a political artifact, an aging
feminist (80 on September 1, 2000), author and lecturer, despite her
handicap of a bum leg that necessitates cane and electric cart. She lives
in West Lake Hills, overlooking Austin, the capital of Texas. President
Clinton named her to the advisory committee of the White House Conference
on Aging. He is the fourth president to appoint Mrs. Carpenter to a
position of trust. The author has been honored by her profession, serving
as president of the National Women’s Press Club, as the recipient of many
journalism awards, and is a Distinguished Alumnus of The University of
Texas at Austin. She was one of the 271 founders of the National Women’s
Political Caucus in July of 1971. After that, she hit the ERA ratification
trail with a group including Erma Bombeck and Judy Carter. Her home in
Austin is still a gathering place for movers and shakers, and is her
launching pad for speeches and articles. When she is not busy writing she
lectures on Growing Old with Grace and Humor, Humor is Therapy, and the
Widening World of Women.
