Harlem Stage is the performing arts center that bridges Harlem’s cultural legacy to contemporary artists of color and dares to provide the artistic freedom that gives birth to new ideas.
For over 35 years our singular mission has been to perpetuate and celebrate the unique and diverse artistic legacy of Harlem and the indelible impression it has made on American culture. We provide opportunity, commissioning, and support for artists of color, and make performances easily accessible to all audiences. Each year, our education programs provide over 2,300 New York City schoolchildren with an introduction and access to the rich diversity, excitement and inspiration of the performing arts.
Our 2019–2020 season amplifies the Black Radical Imagination as a source of liberation. We position Harlem as muse as we celebrate the Centennial of the Harlem Renaissance and the legacy of Sun Ra and Afrofuturism. Through these two powerful themes, Harlem Stage will reflect on and celebrate the past, present and artistic future of Harlem and explore how the Harlem Renaissance continues to be a rich source of inspiration across the globe while Afrofuturism continues to push the boundaries of our artistic imagination.
